Hurricane Michelle Closes The Sheraton Grand Resort
Paradise Island for Repairs; 95% of the Hotel
Rooms in The Bahamas are Fully Operational

Hurricane Michelle Clear of The Islands Of The Bahamas

Nassau, November 7, 2001 — Hurricane Michelle is now completely clear of The Islands Of The Bahamas. Most of the damage to The Bahamas consisted of downed power lines, fallen trees and flooding in low-lying areas. Telephone service remained intact in most areas for the duration of the storm and power was cut to many areas as a standard precaution while work crew cleared power lines and made the main roadways passable. Power has been restored to most residents and properties.

According to the Minister of Tourism, Hon Tommy Turnquest, “We wanted to await word on the status of all our islands before making any definitive statement . . . the storm caused no loss of life or injuries. With few exceptions, most hotel properties and more than 95% of the hotel rooms in The Bahamas are fully operational”.

Andros, the largest island in The Bahamas took the brunt of the storm with many of its lodges and flats for bonefishing receiving some damage, which is still being assessed. Nassau/Paradise Island

The Sheraton Grand Resort
Paradise Island
received a more weakened Michelle with many guests opting to ride out the storm at such places as the Atlantis and Comfort Suites on Paradise Island, the British Colonial Hilton downtown Nassau and at the Radisson, Breezes, Sandals and Marriott on Cable Beach. Those properties reported only minimal damage from the storm and are operating normally.

The Sheraton Grand sustained some damage to its lobby, waterfront restaurants and air-conditioning system and is likely to remain closed for the next thirty days for repairs. Clean up of the Ocean Club is scheduled for the next 5-7 days to assure complete satisfaction of the property's luxury standards and extensive landscaping.  Guests due to stay at the Ocean Club through November 14 are being offered suite accommodations at Atlantis or the opportunity to reschedule their vacation.

Nassau International and Grand Bahama Island International Airports, the two principal international airports in The Bahamas are open.
