New Interior Design at Kauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy Reflects the ‘Golden Age of Hawaii’

KAPAA, HAWAII—NOVEMBER 17, 1999 -- One of Kauai’s landmark resort properties is currently enjoying bragging rights to much more than a new name. Soon, it will also have an entirely new look. The recently renamed Kauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy (formerly the Kauai Beachboy Hotel) is preparing to welcome guests to its newly remodeled resort units in early May as the first phase of a $10 million refurbishment nears completion.

Newly designed features include a new swimming pool with natural rock formation waterscapes, a children’s pool, oceanside jacuzzi plus extensive landscaping and a cascading water feature at the main entrance. These will all be ready for use in December. The resort is located on eight acres on the east side of the island, near the Coconut Marketplace and is in close proximity to theaters, shopping and dining.

Jeanne Starling, A.S.I.D., designer from the Orlando-based Pamela Temples Interiors describes the new interiors: “We approached the interior design of the resort to reflect the ‘Golden Age of Hawaii’ to celebrate the classic spirit of this era in the Hawaiian Islands.  The interiors were created to convey an Old Hawaii residential feel, as opposed to a hotel. The result is a warm and welcoming, unpretentious, yet elegant property.”

The design team selected classic fabrics and rich furniture finishes, along with plank flooring.  Each one- and two-bedroom unit features sliding doors that open to private lanais with views overlooking the pool or the palm-framed turquoise ocean. All units have a washer and dryer and fully-appointed kitchen as well as data ports in the phones, in-room movies, and multiple telephones and televisions. In every unit, guests can open the door and listen to the waves on the beach or enjoy a mesmerizing sunrise.

Landscaping is being completed by Kauai Nursery & Landscaping and the architect for the buildings, pool and common areas is the respected firm of Wimberly, Allison, Tong and Goo of their Honolulu office.

Malana de Silva, resort general manager, reports that construction will be completed in phases as Shell Vacations converts the former hotel’s 233 units into 69 one-bedrooms, 33 two-bedrooms and six hotel rooms. “We anticipate that the renovation of the Kauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy will result in a positive impact to the community by improving the quality of accommodations offered along the Coconut Coast. The interior refurbishment is scheduled to take place in three successive six-month phases, finalized in December 2000. According to de Silva, there are hotel rooms available for the millennium celebration period at a most affordable rate. Reservations may be made through travel agents.

Shell Vacations operates 14 vacation ownership resorts in California, Arizona, Canada and Hawaii and serves more than 50,000 owners. Shell’s other Hawaii resorts include the Kona Coast Resort in Kailua-Kona, Paniolo Greens in Waikoloa and the newly purchased units in Mauna Loa Village on the Kona Coast of the Big Island.
